These are modern window curtains with large plastic or metal rings (called eyelets) sewn into their panels. These eyelets are to be directly threaded onto a curtain rod or pole, leading to soft, structured and even folds. This style of curtains suits both modern and traditional home decors.
When buying eyelet window curtains, make sure that your curtain fabric is 1.5 to 2 times wider than your curtain rod. Opt for thicker fabrics like silk, velvet or brocade if you need light control and insulation. For busy areas, keep the curtain length slightly above the floors. Prioritize low-maintenance fabrics like polyester or cotton for areas with a lot of traffic and constant use.
Light and medium-weight fabrics work best in this regard, such as linen, cotton, polyester and faux silk. For the best results, you should avoid using way too heavy fabrics like silk, velvet or brocade drapes. Also, do not use very stiff fabrics, like corduroy as those become hard to handle.
While this mainly depends on the width of the curtain panel and how much fullness you need, there does exist a certain rule of thumb. According to this, one eyelet is needed for every 4 inches of curtain panel width. For instance, if a curtain panel is 48 inches wide, it will need 12 eyelets.
The main difference is that grommets are a two-piece system (featuring a washer and a stem) and larger in size, plus more robust too. Whereas eyelets are a one-piece system (the metal gets folded over itself during installation). They are smaller in size and mostly used with curtains.
